Full Time Hiking Guide

We are hiring a full time guide to join The Adventure Gene. 

We run guided hiking and snow camping trips across the Australian Alps. Our trips are built around ultralight gear, skill-building and modern hiking, and every guest uses a full ultralight kit from brands like Durston, Neve and SlingFin.

Our mission is to enable outdoor journeys by sharing hard-fought knowledge and expertise. As our guide, you’ll bring your own passion and experience to help guests achieve their own goals.

Your year:

• About 100 days guiding: trips of 2 to 16 days, mostly 10 to 15 km a day, with one guide for every five guests (up to 2 guides with 10 guests)
• About 75 days in our Canberra office, doing the operations work that keeps trips running smoothly

• The rest is time off: 4 weeks' annual leave plus recovery time after trips (totals around 15 weeks of time away from work per year for your own adventures). 

Who we're looking for:

• You love long-distance hiking. Thru-hiking experience is highly regarded, but not required.
• You enjoy being around people. Our guests range from first-timers to very experienced hikers.
• You live in Canberra or are willing to move here (it's a great base if you love hiking).
• You don't need formal guiding experience, because we'll train you. Cert III/IV holders are welcome, but it isn't required.
• Snow experience is a bonus.
• You'll need Wilderness First Aid before your first trip, but not to apply

What it's really like:

On multi-day trips, guests rely on you from dawn till dark. Trips run for up to 16 days, sometimes back to back, and a real part of the year is office work. It suits someone who’s passionate about hiking and about transforming people’s lives. If that sounds like you, we’d love to hear from you.
